Why Was It Created?
Before the center was set up, many sports disputes in the UAE would go through the normal court system or directly to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland. This was time-consuming and expensive.
Now, thanks to the UAE’s own center, many domestic sports disputes can be handled right here in the country, saving time, money, and allowing for a better understanding of local sports rules and culture.
What Kinds of Disputes Can the Center Handle?
The UAE National Sports Arbitration Center can deal with:
- Disputes between athletes and clubs
- Contract issues (e.g., salary disagreements or early terminations)
- Appeals against decisions made by local sports federations
- Disciplinary matters
- Transfer disputes
For example, if a football player feels they were unfairly suspended by a local football association, they can file an appeal with this center.
How Does It Work?
The process is straightforward:
- A case is submitted by one of the parties involved (like an athlete or club).
- Arbitrators are appointed to study the case. These are neutral legal experts, often with experience in both law and sports.
- The arbitrators review the documents, listen to both sides, and give a final decision.
Just like in international sports arbitration, the decisions made by the UAE center are binding, meaning both sides must follow them.
Is It Connected to CAS?
While the UAE National Sports Arbitration Center is independent, it follows international standards and procedures that are similar to CAS (the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland).
If the dispute involves international rules or federations like FIFA or the IOC, or if either party is unhappy with the national decision, they can still take the matter to CAS as a higher authority.
